Take Action to Become Your Best Myeloma Advocate

Choose one or more of the actions below to get started becoming YOUR own best myeloma advocate, then share what you did on social media using the hashtags #discovermyeloma #curemyeloma (don’t forget to the use the hashtags or we don’t get the sponsor donation.)

  1. Identify and invite people to be part of your healthcare “team.” This could include family members, your nurse and doctor, your caregiver or others who constitute your personal advisory board!
  2. Join an online support group or find a support group in your area and join it. We have a myeloma patient Facebook group and a myeloma family/caregiver group if you’d like to join those. Or connect with other patients with any of these great resources.

    If you’ve been a member of one of these online support groups for 6 months or more since dx and you have not done all of the above, you are not paying attention. If you are not strong enough to hold the reins, make sure someone on your team is.

    What type of genetic testing do you ask for? I am 67 and my mother died from this.

      Barbara, I don’t know if you can get this test if you are not a myeloma patient, but just a relative. This covers a test by a company called Signal Genetics. You can email them at info@signalgenetics.com. Typically it will only pick up genetic features that are present when myeloma cells are present. Patients can’t even do this test when they are disease free. I’m not sure how to run a general genetics panel as a relative but I know there are companies that do it.
