Research Focus: Over the past 30 years, Dr. Tom Heffner, MD, has been active in clinical research in hematologic malignancies based on drug development protocols and cooperative group phase 2 and 3 protocols through the Southeastern Cancer Study Group and the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group where he has been an active member of the Myeloma Committee. In the past few years this clinical research interest has extended to phase 1 trials, many as first-in-human type.
With his extensive clinical background, Dr. Heffner has helped to begin the clinical multiple myeloma program that has developed nationally along with the efforts of clinical colleagues. Currently, he has a goal of developing a similar regional and national program for Waldenström’s macroglobulinemia and has just written a national ECOG-led intergroup protocol for macroglobulinemia and also is local principal investigator for several myeloma, lymphoma, acute lymphoblastic leukemia and chronic lymphocytic leukemia studies.
