Let's Get Moving with the Muscles for Myeloma 30-Day Fitness Challenge in September for Blood Cancer Awareness Month

Our goal in bringing awareness to Multiple Myeloma and fitness is to show we are in this fight together. If you are a patient, a caregiver, a family member, or working towards a cure and better treatment, we want you to have the best possible physical and emotional health. As a foundation, we value advocacy for yourself/loved ones. Part of that fight is a push for activity. Studies show that being physically active improves outcomes with treatments and helps improve the ability to give care (for caregivers).

With our Muscles for Myeloma program, we strive to bring education, opportunities, and events to flex your muscles in activity. We are so grateful to have two events back to back to raise awareness coming up:

Muscles for Myeloma 5K and 1 Mile Virtual Walk/Run

On Saturday, August 28th join us for our 5th annual Muscles for Myeloma 5k and 1-mile walk/run. Due to lingering COVID issues for group events in Ohio, we will host it as a virtual event, which will allow us to include patients, caregivers and family members from all over the world. All race proceeds will go directly to the Myeloma Crowd Research Initiative to fund academic research that can contribute to a myeloma cure.

Muscles for Myeloma 30-Day Fitness Challenge in September 2021

We are so excited to be rallying together, once again to do our semi-annual MoveSpring challenge. Commit yourself during Blood Cancer Awareness Month (September 2021) to stand up against myeloma by being active for 20 minutes each day. All are welcome to participate! The goal is to perform 20 min of activity 5 days a week. Those who do at least 120 min total will get a MUSCLES 4 MYELOMA tee shirt. Those who do at least 15 days during the month for 20 min per day will be in a drawing for gift cards. Those who meet the goal of 25 days for 20 min will be included in the drawing for a new Apple watch. We will be using a phone app called MoveSpring to record your daily minutes. Activity can include anything that gets you moving - walking, running, swimming, gardening, pickle ball, etc.

The Muscles for Myeloma 30-Day Fitness Challenge is FREE and is open to all to join.

If you would like to join us for our MoveSpring challenge, please sign up here. You can join the app, but the campaign won't begin until September 1. If you need a code, use "muscles".

In our Muscles for Myeloma Facebook page we feel a sense of strength and community together. The group LOVES this month-long fitness challenge. Everyone shares their fitness activity, photos and encourages and motivates one another. Members feel that sense of community and comfort knowing they aren’t on this journey alone. When I asked what the Muscles For Myeloma 30-Day Fitness Challenge meant to them, it was an outpouring of positive responses:

“The challenge keeps me motivated. I love being apart of a community and seeing everyone's beautiful pictures”

“I love listening to everyone’s story as they work out, but the sharing helps encourage and motivates me daily”

“These challenges help me feel like I am part of a community and not on this journey alone. I feel the support of the group and I love seeing the photos”

“I really enjoy these challenges, they give me extra motivation to keep moving. I try to move as much as I can at work and home. These challenges help to give me that extra push”

In the challenge, we get to know each other through engagements, photos, and sharing. What you put into the challenge you will receive back tenfold.

Our motto at the Myeloma Crowd is “patients first.” Your health and safety will always be our top priority. We hope that by holding these virtual events we can enable all to participate safely from your home, but feel the support from our community as a whole.

Thank you to our incredible sponsors for making this race possible!
