Don't Ignore Common Symptoms: Todd Huff's Myeloma Story
Posted Jul 16, 2021

My multiple myeloma story started in 2016 when I began to experience pain in my lower back that radiated down my right leg. I received chiropractic and physical therapy to relieve the pain. I thought I had a sciatic nerve issue. Finally, after almost a year and no relief to the pain, I received an MRI around Thanksgiving 2017.

My diagnosis came the very next day and treatment for a large tumor in my pelvic region began. Biopsies confirmed multiple myeloma and additional spots were found along my lower spinal column. I thought I’d missed the window for successfully treating it after my year of thinking it was sciatica. I was fortunate that the myeloma was stage 1.

The tumor was treated with radiation therapy and I then received several rounds of Revlimid in conjunction with Dexamethasone and Velcade.

After the drugs brought my “numbers” into the normal range I went to Mayo Clinic, in Phoenix, where I received a Stem Cell Transplant using my own stem cells.

I would just like to emphasize the importance of not waiting and getting screened immediately if you are experiencing any type of chronic pain. Don’t assume it’s something benign.

Also, it’s so important to have an advocate to help during the treatment process. Someone to keep a record of doctors, treatments, appointments and to ask questions that you might not think of as a patient.

One last thing… I know receiving treatment from Mayo Clinic is not possible for everyone but if you have the choice to go there, I’d strongly recommend it.

As of today, I am taking a monthly infusion of the maintenance drug Darazalax. My numbers are good and three annual bone marrow biopsies have shown no sign of MM at the molecular level.

I’m an avid cyclist and feel fortunate to be able to continue to cycle and to basically live with no limitations. I’m blessed to have received such great and competent care and I’m living each day with a much different and grateful attitude.
